On the occasion of the 68th Independence Day of the Republic of India, I would like to convey my heartfelt greetings on behalf of the State of Israel and congratulate each and every Indian for the remarkable achievements this country has made since its independence in 1947.

As the largest democracy in the world, India is an example of success, progress and development in a wide spectrum of fields. India, with its rich culture, is a unique country with extraordinary people.

The relations between Israel and India are based, first and foremost, on common values. Our shared beliefs and desire for political independence are what bind Israelis and Indians in our pursuit for freedom and self-determination. It is no coincidence that two civilizations with a long and rich history that goes back thousands of years, have gained their political independence almost at the same time in the end of the 1940’s of the twentieth century.

It is a proven fact that Jews have been living safely in India for more than 2000 years not only because of the strong and long lasting relations between our people but also due to the openness of the Indian society throughout the centuries and its ability to welcome all people.

I would like to wish the people of India and the Indian Government many more years of success and progress in every field this great nation excels.

On behalf of the people of Israel, I wish you all – Happy Independence Day!
